President Obama Defends Gay Marriage

There are many countries out there where LGBT rights will never be accepted into reality. In Egypt, there are laws prohibiting “shameless public acts”, which is being used to imprison gay men. China’s government considered homosexuality a mental disorder until 2001. Mobs in Senegal have disinterred bodies of men they believe were gays and dragged them through the streets.

Although gay-rights activists hailed President Barack Obama’s support for same-sex marriage as a token of achievement, for many around the world the idea of legal unions between homosexuals is a fantasy. In China, “the government treats homosexuality like it does not exist”, said Xiong Jing, an activist who volunteers with gay supporters in Beijing.The LBGT community in many countries would settle for simply getting to be themselves without fear of being attacked or thrown in prison because of their sexuality.

China’s strict government show little to zero tolerance for activism of any kind, it was considered a crime until 1997. Xiong welcomed President Obama’s supportfor gay marriage, but alerted the President that legalizing it in China would beunrealistic and impossible. She also quoted that “if, he as president, was able to not just express his own personal opinion but to support policies on this, that would be even better.”

I truly believe that for those who supports gay marriage the time is near. We were all created equal, so we should be treated equally?—right? Check the constitution we are human. For example, if a person has schizophrenia would you drag him up and down the street or thrown him in jail? This is a mental disorder which is the same classification that China’s government put homosexuality in. Right is right, wrong is wrong, no human should be treated in an animal- like manner.
