Wikipedia, we all know this group, it is a non-ad-based content encyclopedia on a wide range of topics. You name anything and they will have for you. Right from people having their profiles on Wikipedia of celebrities to companies and many more, you name it and it has valuable and researched content on it. All these years, the company has been launching its services free of cost and they claim to work on the charity money. Every year they have their crowdfunding campaigns to collect money for their day-to-day operations. Now, as per the latest buzz, the company is all set to embark upon a paid choice for people who want to showcase their major technology pages like the one from Apple or Google which consume the content a lot on their pages.
Wikipedia has been competent enough to deliver content with greater efficiency to these tech giants. As per reports, the Wikimedia Foundation that takes care of Wikipedia and several other ventures has announced a venture this Tuesday called Wikimedia Enterprise. As per Wired reports, the foundation has embarked upon a new platform, which will deal with paid services. It claims that technology-based companies like Apple will not get the chance to consume their content on a paid basis. Everytime they consume and reuse the data on Wikimedia, they are going to pay to the Foundation taking care of these ventures. They will create a user-friendly and simple working style system for the same.
Although this program is supposed to be introduced a little later in 2021, the Wired reports claim that the foundation is now going to tie up with several technology companies that seem to come under the way. The report fails to give any detail about how tech companies like Apple are going to work together. However, the same reports suggest that the company is in discussion with the team to come out with systems that would work smoothly with them. They claim that things are underway and will soon be taking shape. Currently, Apple including other technology companies are still using the content available on Wikipedia all over their platforms. Like for example, Apple is seen using content over its Spotlight search results along with the Siri responses.
At the same time, the Wikimedia Enterprise program will not go to black the free option that technology companies have been using earlier and currently as well. As per reports, the team is working in tandem with other groups as well to embark on a smooth sailing of this new project. As per reports, the team along with the foundation is happy and excited about this new venture. At least this will help them earn for their operation cost of other projects which they have been managing from charity or crowdfunding. However, much would depend upon the maintaining and sustainability of the platform. It is not going to change the things that have been working earlier. The company claims that this is the first time they have thought of trying something commercial for their users for their services.
